So much for bringing Hailey back to Casa do Diabo. Instead, Iâd have to crash with her and Annabelle. We didnât have many options. At the very least, since Vilokan was underground, weâd have more or less free reign no matter the hour of the day. Truthfully, most vampires were welcome in Vilokan provided we knew how to behave ourselves and didnât make a meal of any of the citizens of the underground city. It was too good a deal for many vampires to pass up. But Iâd lived in Casa do Diabo with Ramon and, until recently, Nico for more than a century. It was home. Besides, I couldnât exactly guarantee that Ramon would be able to resist sampling from the population.
Moll didnât join us there, though. Even when Iâd known her before Iâd been turned, she lived alone. Apparently sheâd had children at some point. But when I met her, theyâd all long left the nest. Living in a shared house in an underground community just wasnât her style. I was reasonably sure sheâd managed to find a barely standing abandoned house somewhere in the woods.
It wasnât the first time Iâd been to Vilokan since I left the asylum. Iâd been back a few times to visit with Cain. The worldâs first murderer (yes, he was that Cain) was also an accomplished psychologist. While heâd rightly identified that I had unresolved âdaddyâ issues to sort through, that wasnât why I kept going back to see him. It was Edwin. My brother was still something of a recluse in my head. While heâd occasionally speak up about something casual, for the most part he stayed silentâunless we were on the hunt. Edwin craved tortureânot so much that he wanted to be tortured, though it wouldnât be surprising if he dug that, too, but he enjoyed seeing people suffer. His time in hell had turned him into something of a suffering junkie. And when I was on a hunt, it was like he saw an opportunity to indulge in his obsessions. If only there was a way to transfer his spirit to Ramon⦠the two would be a match made in hell. Ramonâs penchant for dismemberment and Edwinâs obsession with disembowelment would go together like bread and butter. I was averse to both behaviorsâmostly because the thrill of either just wasnât worth the risk that invariably accompanied such barbarism. There were ways to experience the thrill of a hunt without leaving bodies behind.
I wasnât bringing Edwin to see Cain just so he could come to grips with his trauma and get over it. I was taking him there because, according to Cain, Edwinâs time in hell had given him something called PTSD. Itâs what, back in the day, they used to call nostalgia, or soldierâs heart, and a bit later, shell shock. According to Cain, seeing other people suffer was a defense mechanism Edwin used to try and externalize his own memories of hell. Heâd suffered so much that heâd
